If you need an easy chip and veggie dip, look no further. This homemade green onion dip recipe is as easy to make as the chip dip made with a French onion soup packet but has much more flavor.

Yes, you can buy chip dips at the store, but I haven’t found one that is as fresh-tasting and delicious. Besides, why buy one with all the added ingredients when you can make a delicious dip in just 10 minutes and use ingredients you probably already have on hand?

Why Make Green Onion Dip?

This creamy and flavorful green onion dip is perfect for parties or unexpected guests and is a hit at any gathering. I recently made it for our Super Bowl party, and everyone loved it.

Moreover, this dip is incredibly easy to make and requires no cooking – just 10 minutes, including chopping time, and you’re ready to go.

This homemade dip can be made in advance, allowing you to focus on other party preparations. The best part? It’s better than anything you’ll find pre-packaged on the shelves.

This dip is all about simplicity and fresh flavor. It skips the mayo commonly found in other creamy onion dips and instead relies on a blend of cream cheese and sour cream for its luscious texture.

I love that the dips are easy to customize when made at home. You can switch up the parsley with cilantro or add some jalapenos to make them spicy.

Ingredients & Substitutions

To make this gluten-free green onion dip, you need the following ingredients.

Green onion dip ingredients are ready on a gray table.

Green Onions: The star ingredient of this recipe. Green onions are also called scallions or spring onions. Fresh green onions are the best. I suggest chopping them finely and using both the white and green parts.

Cream Cheese: This provides the creamy base for the dip. Use full-fat cream cheese for the best consistency and taste. Soften the cream cheese to room temperature before using.

Sour Cream: Sour cream complements the cream cheese with its fresh, tangy flavor. If you want to make this dip lighter, you can use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. It works really well, and there is no difference in taste.

Lemon Juice: It balances the flavors of the dip by adding a little acidity and brightening them up. You can also use apple cider vinegar in place of fresh lemon juice.

Garlic: Use fresh garlic or garlic powder, whatever you have on hand. It adds a little spiciness and lots of flavor to the dip.

Onion Powder: This is optional, but we love to add a little for that extra flavor.

Parsley: You can use fresh or dried parsley. Of course, fresh is preferable, but I have made this dip with dried parsley, and it works just as well.

Salt and Pepper: These are the essential seasonings that bring out all the flavors in the dip.

How to Make Green Onion Dip?

I prefer to use a food processor to make this dip. You can also use a blender to make this dip.

Prepare Green Onions

  • Trim the roots of the green onions. Then, hold them all together in a bundle and place them on the chopping board. Dice them finely. I suggest using both white and green parts of the green onions (or scallions).

Make the Dip

  • Combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, lemon juice, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper into the bowl of a food processor.

  • Blend it on high until the mixture is creamy and no clumps of cream cheese remain.
  • Add in the chopped green onions.

  • Pulse until the green onion is cut into smaller pieces. If you like larger pieces of green onion, pulse less; if you like them smaller, pulse more.
  • If you prefer the green onions to be crunchier, you can also skip pulsing completely and mix them in with a spatula.

  • Transfer the dip to a container or bowl. Cover with a lid or cling wrap and chill the green onion dip until you are ready to serve. Refrigerating and letting the dip rest gives it time to develop the flavors. I suggest to refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, but two hours are been better.
  • This recipe makes about 2 cups and will serve 8-10 people.

Recipe Tips

Cream Cheese: It is important to have the cream cheese at room temperature. This will make it easier to blend it smooth.

Consistency: Pulse the dip to your desired consistency. If you prefer, you can skip pulsing altogether and just mix the green onions, too.

Refrigerate: Ensure to refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, but up to 2 hours is even better.

How to Serve Green Onion Dip?

Here are some of my favorite ways to serve this easy green onion dip.

  • This green onion dip makes the perfect chip dip for your favorite potato chips, tortilla chips, bagel bites, or crackers.
  • Want to dip more than chips into this easy chip dip? Don’t worry; this makes a delicious veggie dip too. You can dip cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, and celery into this dip.
  • Want more? Use this green onion dip instead of mayo when making sandwiches.
  • Add a dollop of this dip on loaded baked potatoes.
  • Serve with french fries or sweet potato fries.

Variations

Chives: For a different twist, replace the diced green onions with an equal amount of fresh chives, offering a more pronounced and herbaceous flavor. Fresh herbs are always an excellent addition to a flavorful dip.

Lighten it up: Use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream to lighten this dip, without affecting the taste.

Make it spicy: We like to add a diced jalapeno along with the green onions to make this dip spicier.

Common Questions

How long does this green onion dip last?

This green onion chip dip will last in the fridge for up to 3 days, so feel free to make it up ahead of time for your next party or get-together.

Can I substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream?

Yes, Greek yogurt works great as a replacement for sour cream in this recipe.

Can you freeze green onion dip?

I don’t recommend freezing this dip as the cream cheese and sour cream do not freeze well.
