Navratri is a beautiful time of devotion and mindful eating, but the specific fasting rules can sometimes feel confusing, depending on your family traditions. This guide is here to help you navigate those with ease so you can focus on the celebration. We’ve also curated a collection of our 35 favorite Navratri recipes to help you create delicious, soul-satisfying meals for the nine days!

When it comes to Navratri, the definition of “fasting” can change quite a bit depending on whether you are in North or South India. While the spirit of devotion is the same, the kitchen rules often look very different!

In North India, Navratri fasting (Vrat) is typically very strict regarding grains. The tradition follows a “Phalahari” or “Grain-free” diet. This means wheat, rice, and suji (semolina) are completely off-limits.

Instead, people reach for “pseudo-grains” like Kuttu (Buckwheat), Singhara (Water Chestnut), and Sama ke Chawal (Barnyard Millet). Even regular table salt is replaced with Sendha Namak (Rock Salt), and lentils are usually avoided entirely.

In South India, particularly during Golu or Navaratri, the focus shifts toward Sattvic eating rather than a total ban on grains. In many households, white rice and suji (semolina) are perfectly acceptable for meals, provided they are prepared without onion, garlic, or heat-inducing spices.

You will often see protein-rich Sundal (seasoned legumes like chickpeas or moong dal) served as the primary Prasad, which would be considered a “no-no” in a traditional North Indian Vrat.

Food ItemNorth Indian (Vrat)South Indian (Sattvic)
Wheat / Maida❌ Strictly Avoided✅ Often Allowed
White Rice❌ Strictly Avoided✅ Usually Allowed
Suji (Semolina)❌ Strictly Avoided✅ Commonly Used
Legumes / Dals❌ Strictly Avoided✅ Essential (e.g., Sundal)
Onion & Garlic❌ Strictly Avoided❌ Strictly Avoided

Pro-Tip: Check with your elders! Fasting traditions can vary slightly from one family to another. Some families use tomatoes and ginger, while others don’t. When in doubt, keep it simple with potatoes, curd, and rock salt!

Navratri Fasting: What to Eat & What to Avoid

If you are observing the Navratri fast for the first time, the rules can feel a bit overwhelming! The goal is to eat “Sattvic” foods—ingredients that are fresh, natural, and calming for the body.

Foods You CAN Eat (Vrat-Friendly)

  • Special Flours: Since wheat and rice are out, use Kuttu (Buckwheat), Singhara (Water Chestnut), or Rajgira (Amaranth) flour.
  • Grains: Swap regular rice for Sama ke Chawal (Barnyard Millet) or Sabudana (Tapioca pearls).
  • Vegetables: Stick to root vegetables and light gourds, such as Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Arbi (Taro), Pumpkin, and Bottle Gourd (Lauki).
  • Dairy: Milk, curd (yogurt), paneer, and homemade white butter are all excellent sources of energy.
  • Salt & Spices: Use Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) instead of regular table salt. Stick to simple spices like Cumin (Jeera), Black Pepper, and Green Cardamom.
  • All Fruits & Nuts: These are perfect for snacking throughout the day.

Foods to Strictly Avoid

  • Grains & Pulses: No wheat, rice, semolina (sooji), all-purpose flour (maida), or lentils (dals).
  • Onion & Garlic: These are considered “Tamasic” (heavy/stimulating) and are strictly prohibited.
  • Common Salt: Regular iodized table salt is not used in fasting recipes.
  • Specific Spices: Many families avoid Turmeric (Haldi), Asafoetida (Hing), Mustard Seeds (Rai), and Garam Masala.
  • Non-Veg & Alcohol: These are a complete “no” during the nine holy days.
